The Hub & Spoke Project

The Hub & Spoke Project

The Hub and Spoke Project a collaboration with Boston Public Schools and the Shah Family Foundation, that is enacting change to provide children more fresh meals and healthful options, with specified community engagement. It is a very exciting project, with such a powerful message, and I am so grateful to be a part of it. According to some scholars, a great milestone in ancient food systems was circumscribing a specific place to cook and eat meals within agrarian life. The hearth was the center of the home and was housed in the kitchen, which means that kitchens play a vital role in the shaping of food culture. So kitchens everywhere have this commonality, they produce connections, memories, smiles, and love. The material culture, the pots, and pans are more than just metal used to cook chicken or roast vegetables they represent the advancement of food culture and the ability for us to save time feeding ourselves so we can learn, grown and change. Which is a goal of the Shah Family Foundation and

the Hub and Spoke program, becoming more efficient at feeding Boston within Boston and enhancing the connection to food and communities.

Colorful rows of food a metal counter in-between, hungry communities. These communities comprised of people who matter and are making a difference from all ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles.  As a manager of a fresh fast-casual food concept, I was worried that my skill set would not translate from feeding young professionals on their way to soul cycle to providing brain food to the hungry young minds of Boston primary schools. However, as my involvement in this project grew from volunteer and beyond, I realized that there were so many comparable aspects. Two of those being mentioned before, colorful rows of food and hungry communities. Some of the more day to day activities; receiving deliveries, ordering products, planning daily operations, establishing standards these are things that the fast-casual world has instilled in me that are so applicable to the cafeterias and kitchen of Boston Public Schools. The cooperative nature of each school is also familiar and heartwarming. The popularity of fast and fresh food establishments shows that a new focus on food is needed, due to food’s multi-faceted meanings within our lives and our societies.
